In the summer of 2018 we were delighted to be invited to take part in submitting ideas for a future vision for the Midlands Art Centre, (MAC), in Birmingham.
As part of the final three architect practices taking part in the bid, we proposed a holistic park vision for how the creative site can embrace further its natural setting within Cannon Hill park.
Our proposals included the following in our approach:
1/ Reformatting an existing cafe area into a triple-height gallery with new openings out to the lake and park.
2/ A new ceramics activities entrance and additional ceramics facilities to support the popular community interest.
3/ Outdoor pavilion huts which reanimate existing courtyard areas which are unused or abandoned.
4/ Artists studios within an existing yard.
5/ Reinstate the victorian Lido within the wider site area.
The project showcased the potential for an important asset to Birmingham, to enhance and nurture arts based activities for the communities of Birmingham which love and use the spaces at MAC.
