Balsall Heath Library
In 2023 as part of Moseley Road Baths’ ‘Diving In’ activity programme in Birmingham, Intervention Architecture were invited to be part of the 'imaginarium' creative pilot. As part of considering how we use the Balsall Heath Library space, the team are inviting in groups to explore how the library can support storytelling and narrative for a broad range of audiences.
Children and young people from Calthorpe Academy, Balsall Heath CATS and Uffculme School helped to design a multisensory sculpture for the library for the upcoming ‘Imaginarium’. From this engagement with Open Theatre, who specialise in non-verbal, physical and inclusive theatre for young people with learning disabilities, the interactive sculpture we installed with Dual Works forms the centrepiece for a programme of performances and workshops this year.
Led by the students, who formed responses to objects, textures, movement and colour included, the installation also makes reference to the existing arches within the library space, allowing for changeability of looped items to explore through and around the form.
