The Club’s Conception

“The club’s conception (or how the egg was cracked)” retraces the now demolished past venues of Birmingham’s The Nightingale Club, which first opened in 1969.

From a terraced house to a working men’s club to an anglers association, its previous sites reflect ongoing threats of regeneration, and the need to shift, occupy and adapt heteronormative structures for queer purpose.

We have collaborated with artist Ryan Kearney, who has collected stories and narratives of the three preceding venues of ‘The club’s conception’, which we have transposed into spatial recollections as architectural plans and models, to create an archival presence.

The exhibition is on at Recent Activity, 4th May – 1st June 2019.
