Submitted for the Scottish Scenic Routes Competition 2015, the proposal comprises of two crafted open ‘rooms’ that celebrate the rhythm and balance of the historic site of Neptune’s Staircase.
On the first of two selected sites, a pavilion structure provides both a visually striking signage point for visitors and promotes views of the landscape to Ben Nevis. The form echoes the platforms of the surrounding context, accentuating the sloping nature of the ground condition by lifting the proposed deck and creating an additional space underneath the structure for seating and meeting.
The second ‘room’ occupies the second site, creating a visual link to encourage visitors to travel up the falls eight locks. The slender form provides views via a periscope system, recapturing the Scottish landscape with an interactive and reimagined viewpoint.
The balancing rooms aim to increase viewer engagement with the site and benefit existing endeavours.
