Station Street

Immediately outside the rear entrance of Birmingham’s New Street Station is Station Street. This road contains the Grade II listed Old Rep theatre, the Crown pub (listed in March 2024) where Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne played their first gig, and the Electric Cinema – which was the country’s oldest working cinema until it closed in early 2024.
Working with key stakeholders, our studio developed independent imagery of what a holistic street-level approach could deliver, with some supporting case studies of where similar street-scale changes have created cultural hubs/areas/zones.
Commissioned by the National Trust, this study has been shared with WMCA and BCC, as well as Nework Rail, who have a placemaking strategy for New St Station.
Project partners Flatpack continue important work around the Electric cinema, and importance of Station St as a cultural hub, more info here.
